Evaluations performed with the purpose of demonstrating the effectiveness of controls to a third party. Security audits use many of the same techniques followed during security assessments but must be performed by independent auditors. The staff members who design, implement and monitor controls for an organization have an inherent conflict of interest when evaluating the effectiveness of those controls.

An exercise that determines the impact of losing the support of any resource to an organization, establishes the escalation of that loss over time, identifies the minimum resources needed to recover, and prioritizes the recovery of processes and supporting systems. Layer 6 of the OSI model. The layer of the ISO Reference Model responsible for formatting and converting data to meet the requirements of the particular system being utilized. The OSI layer that determines how application information is represented (i. e. , encoded) while in transit between two end systems.
