Connectionless

The model of interconnection in which communication takes place without first establishing a connection. Sometimes (imprecisely) called datagram. Examples: Internet IP and OSI CLNP, UDP, ordinary postcards.

A connectionless protocol located at layer 4 of the OSI model. A transport protocol in the Internet suite of protocols. UDP, like TCP, uses IP for delivery; however, unlike TCP, UDP provides for exchange of datagrams without acknowledgments or guaranteed delivery.

Open Systems Interconnection; a sevenlayer model from the ISO that defines and standardizes protocols for communicating between systems, networks and devices. A standard model developed to establish a common communication structure or standard for all computer systems.

The model of interconnection in which communication proceeds through three welldefined phases: connection establishment, data transfer, and connection release. Examples: X. 25, Internet TCP and OSI TP4, ordinary telephone calls.

The fundamental unit of information passed across the Internet. Contains source and destination addresses, along with data and a number of fields that define such things as the length of the datagram, the header checksum, and flags to say whether the datagram can be (or has been) fragmented.

Logical grouping of information sent as a network layer unit over a transmission medium without prior establishment of a virtual circuit. IP datagrams are the primary information units in the Internet. The terms “cell,” “frame,” “message,” “packet,” and “segment” are also used to describe logical information groupings at various layers of the OSI Reference Model and in various technology circles. The combination of Transport layer UDP header and payload.
