Profiling

A form of testing that attempts to verify that a system satisfies the stated criteria for functionality and possibly also for security capabilities of a product. It is used to determine whether end users or customers will accept the completed product. The formal testing conducted to determine whether a software system satisfies its acceptance criteria, enabling the customer to determine whether to accept the system.

A combination of techniques and procedures used during a certification and accreditation process to verify the correctness and effectiveness of security controls in an information technology system. Security certification levels represent increasing levels of intensity and rigor in the verification process and include such techniques as reviewing and examining documentation; interviewing personnel; conducting demonstrations and exercises; conducting functional, regression, and penetration testing; and analyzing system design documentation.

A system that randomly generates a private key, and is used only once to encrypt a message that is then decrypted by the receiver using a matching onetime pad and key. Onetime pads have the advantage that there is theoretically no way to “break the code” by analyzing a succession of messages. Manual onetime cryptosystem produced in pad form.

A security technique that verifies an individual’s identity by analyzing a unique physical attribute, such as a handprint. Automated methods of authenticating or verifying an individual based upon a physical or behavioral characteristic. The use of human physiological or behavioral characteristics as authentication factors for logical access and identification for physical access.
